Why Choose the Direct Anterior Approach (DAA)?

The Direct Anterior Approach (DAA) is a minimally invasive hip replacement technique that provides faster recovery, less pain, and improved mobility compared to traditional methods. By accessing the hip joint from the front, DAA preserves surrounding muscles, minimizes tissue damage, and promotes a quicker return to daily activities.

Unlike conventional hip replacement techniques that require cutting through major muscles, DAA allows surgeons to work between muscle groups, leading to reduced trauma, minimal scarring, and a lower risk of complications. This technique is particularly beneficial for active individuals seeking a swift return to their normal lifestyle with enhanced joint function and long-term durability.

Minimally Invasive Surgery
Minimally Invasive Surgery

DAA involves a smaller incision and less muscle disruption compared to traditional approaches.

Faster Recovery & Rehabilitation
Faster Recovery & Rehabilitation

Patients typically experience quicker mobility and a shorter hospital stay.

Medicine side effects
Less Postoperative Pain

Reduced muscle trauma leads to lower pain levels and a decreased need for pain medications.

Lower Risk of Dislocation
Lower Risk of Dislocation

The anterior approach provides better joint stability, minimizing the risk of hip dislocation.

Ideal for Active Individuals

Suitable for younger or physically active patients who want a quicker return to daily activities.

Better Functional Outcomes
Better Functional Outcomes

Allows for a more natural hip function post-surgery.

Does DAA have any risks or complications?

Any hip replacement surgery carries some risk element. These risks are rare but can unfortunately occur at times: Fracture, nerve damage, dislocation, infection, limb length inequality, blood clots in the leg (thrombosis).

Trained in DAA Hip Replacement surgery by Dr. Jozef Vandeputte from Belgium (World Authority on DAA).

Frequently Asked Questions

Early AVN (Stage I and II) needs medications, observation, physical therapy, and sometimes Core decompression surgery. Stage III AVN is treated with Total Hip Replacement (THR) if there is collapse of the femoral head or severe pain. Stage IV AVN (Osteoarthritis) is treated with a THR.

You will be examined by Dr Ameet Pispati in detail, your history, physical evaluations and investigations will be considered when making this decision. Each patient is individually assessed and the best treatment plan is recommended to him/her. In general, if you have Avascular necrosis or arthritis with a hip that has good movement and without very severe bone loss for many years, you are likely to be a suitable candidate for a DAA THR.

For the usual THR - a Physiotherapist needs to attend to you daily for about 3 weeks after surgery. Please sit on chairs or sofas or use beds that have a minimum height of atleast 18 inches (ideally 20 inches) from the ground. If you are overweight, please use an adjustable height chair commode for 2 months to sit on for toilet purposes (minimum 18-20 inches height). If you are not overweight, you may use a "toilet seat raise" to raise the height of your toilet to atleast 18 inches (this is available at all leading Chemist / Pharmacy shops). Do not bend forward to lift things up from the floor – use a special device called “Helping Hand” for this.

For surgery with the DAA THR (Direct Anterior Approach), we do not impose the above restrictions and most patients are able to walk comfortably and sit on the floor a few months after the surgery.

This depends on the status of the joint before surgery and whether you have other conditions such as blood pressure, diabetes etc. On an average, you may need to stay 2-3 days after the surgery in hospital. Thereafter physiotherapy is recommended for good recovery.

The patient will be examined and should bring along the X-rays, and any other investigations. In case any further tests are needed, these will be advised at the time of consultation. Every patient does not need surgery. The best possible treatment option is offered for each patient.
